We are Nas with Notepads. We love words.
We love to write, we love to read and we love to hear everybody’s words.
Our Mission & Vision
We started Nas with Notepads as a group that aims to promote quality poetry in Khartoum. Our main purpose is to attract genuine and outstanding poets and a loving and truly interested audience for evenings of quality poetry and spoken word performances in an intimate and cozy atmosphere.
Our overall mission is to promote, using the creative process, a platform through which youth can both make a substantial impact on Sudanese culture and project an image of Sudan that has yet to be seen.
These are some of the things we hope to achieve through our work:
- Free expression
- Youth engagement
- A culture of writing and creative expression
- Cultural awareness
- Making Sudan positively recognized through NWN
NWN Events
Nas with Notepads hold poetry and spoken word events in the open mic style on the first Monday of every month. In our efforts to promote free expression, we provide a completely uncensored mic, which means that we have no control over the language that the poet chooses to use, nor are we responsible for the content their poetry addresses. That being said, we do understand the environment in which we operate, and value the safety of our poets and audience.
This is why our events are private and by invitation only. Invitations are sent by email to the NWN mailing list. Those who wish to attend reply to the invitation email, and names of attendees are added to the guest list on first-come first-serve basis until venue capacity is reached (usually around 90 people). Once the guest list is filled, interested individuals will be placed on waiting list pending any cancellations.
If you are interested in receiving invitations to NWN events, join our mailing list by clicking the button below.
NWN events are photographed and uploaded to our website (we’re still working on video!). Click here to view photos from past events.
We encourage not only those who perform at our events, but all poets and spoken word artists to submit their work to be shared on our website. Click here to read the latest submissions. Click here to submit your own!
WORDshops
The WORDshop is – as it sounds – a workshop that addresses the ins-and-outs of poetry and spoken word. This informal learning circle serves as an exchange of ideas and knowledge between its participants, encouraging the idea that every individual, no matter their age or level of experience, has something valuable to offer.
