by Sadig Gasim Mukhayer

Nothing quells my hunger
Nothing quenches my thirst
Nothing eases the pain
I’ve felt since I desserted my dessert

Nothing seems as silly
Nothing seems quite so absurd
Nothing to me holds less meaning
Than these very words

Everything’s what you mean
Everything’s what I’d do
Everything I said I mean
But what I mean Remains Untrue

Anything I’d do to change
Anything to stay the same
Anything to obtain what I misplaced,
What’s lost to be regained

Things not always as they seem
Things mislead and show the way
Things that should have, would have, could have
Drench my every day

So

Nothing quenches my thirst
Or hunger to be quelled
Nothing to be gained
When in the past I dwell
